Entry Behaviors
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
Instructors are able to use a mouse to interact with Microsoft Windows XP computer operating system GUI including:
  • select objects (click on buttons, icons, drop down menus, etc.)
  • navigate application menus
  • adjust audio volume from taskbar
  • close windows
How to use a mouse to interact with Mircosoft Windows XP computer operating system GUI does not have to be taught.

Same as above.
Instructors are able to connect a microphone to a computer.
How to connect a microphone to a computer does not need to be taught.

PowerPoint presentations created by instructors as part of existing course materials.
Instructors are able to perform basic operations using the Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 software application.
Basic operations of Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 do not need to be taught; only new features of MS PPT 2007 relavant to the instructional goal will need to be taught.

Prior Knowledge
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists. Informal survey of instructors in ID class.
Instructors are able to identify a USB microphone connector.
How to identify a USB microphone connector does not need to be taught.

Same as above.
Instructors are able to identify USB port on a computer.
How to identify a USB port on a computer does not need to be taught.

Same as above.
Instructors are not able to perform basic troubleshooting if a problem occurs when setting up a microphone to record audio.
Separate basic troubleshooting sheet for setting up a microphone may need to be included in the instructional materials.

Previous experience
Instructors often do not know proper terminology for objects in the operating system or applications.
Steps in instructional materials that use specific terminology in reference to the operating system GUI will need accompanying screenshots with call outs.

Attitudes
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
Instructors place high value on learning skills that can transfer directly to the creation of course materials.
Instructional materials will follow the same process and steps an instructor would use to create course materials in an authentic work setting.

Same as above.
Instructors become frustrated when they do not have instruction for the entire process on how to use a university supported application to create course content for their students; often instructional materials leave out crucial information, such as how to set up a microphone when using an application to record audio or save a file to a format appropriate for online delivery.
Instructional materials will include detailed steps for setting up a microphone and saving the file in the proper format for online delivery.

Motivation
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
Instructors want to develop self efficacy for creating narrated PowerPoint presentations so they feel confident they can create course materials as needed.
Instructional materials will include hands-on practice from start to finish on how to use the Camtasia Studio 7 PowerPoint add-in to create a narrated Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 presentation.

Education and Ability
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists..
Instructors education background varies from currently enrolled in master's degree or ph.d programs to currently holding master's degree or ph.d.
Instruction does not need multiple examples or practice runs; one time through should be enough for instructors to generalize the process and transfer knowledge and skills from the learning setting to an authentic work setting.

Learning preferences
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
Instructors prefer to work on their own time schedule and at a place of their choosing.
Instructional materials will be developed and designed so that the knowledge learned and skills practiced can be generalized and transferred to any personal computer in any setting with Camtasia Studio 7 PowerPoint Add-in and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 installed.

Same as above.
Instructors prefer hands-on practice that can transfer immediately to practical application in their daily work routine.
I will provide instructors with hands-on practice using the Camtasia Studio 7 PowerPoint add-in to create a sample narrated Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 presentation.

Same as above.
Instructors prefer visuals representations of the process to accompany the written instructions.
I will provide screenshots that correspond to each step in the instructions and mirror what the instructors see on the computer screen.

Attitude towards organization

Group Characteristics
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
The target audience is mainly made up of online and f2f instructors that do not have access to human resources for help learning how to create narrated PowerPoint presentations.
Instructional materials will be developed in a format that can easily be delivered online, such as a downloadable .pdf file.

Performance

Support
Handout of instructional materials.
Instructor will use the handout to complete the task without the help of outside resources.
The majority of online instructors will be accessing instructional materials during times or from locations that make help from outside resources difficult or impossible. Relying on the instructional material alone simulates an authentic work setting.

Sample PowerPoint file and sample printed script for narration.
Instructor will use the sample PowerPoint file and sample printed script to create a narrated PowerPoint presentation.
Instructors already have prior knowledge and skills for creating PowerPoint presentations and word documents, therefore those skills do not need to be taught. It is reasonable to assume instructors will be able to generalize the learned knowledge and skills to self produced documents in an authentic work environment.

Microphone
Instructors will be provided a microphone with USB connector.
A majority of Instructors use a microphone with a USB connector; university support recommends using a microphone with USB connector for best audio quality. Generalization and transfer of knowledge and skills is more likely to occur when working with equipment that is similar to the equipment that will be used in an authentic work setting.

Computer workstation with keyboard, mouse, Win XP operating system, and Camtasia Studio 7 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 installed.
Instructors will complete the instruction on a computer booted into the Microsoft Windows XP operating system with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Camtasia Studio 7 installed.
Although some users might be working in the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system in their work setting, generalization and transfer of knowledge and skills from learning setting to work setting is likely to occur due to the fact that either version of the latest operating systems, Win XP or Win 7, will be able to run Camtasia Studio 7 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.

Physical Aspects
Previous experience in current setting
Instructors will be seated at a desk in a cubicle.
Generalization and transfer of knowledge and skills is most likely to occur learning in a setting that simulates the authentic work setting.

Setting will be quiet and conducive to recording a narrated Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 PowerPoint presentation.
Generalization and transfer of knowledge and skills is most likely to occur learning in a setting that simulates the authentic work setting.

Social Aspects
Previous experience in current setting
Instructors will be alone in the cubicle without interference or interruption from people.
Generalization and transfer of knowledge and skills is most likely to occur learning in a setting that simulates the authentic work setting.

Relevance
Prior interaction with instructors in KSU IRC. Interviews with KSU Educational Technology dept. instructional and educational technologists.
Instructors need to be able to create narrated Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 PowerPoint presentations in order to fulfill their job responsibilities for creating course content to deliver to online students.
Instructional materials that require instructors to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to create a narrated PowerPoint presentation through active hands-on practice should result in the ability to perform the same task in an authentic work setting and fullfil their job responsibilities for creating course content to deliver to online students.

Learning
Compatibility with workplace

Ability to simulate workplace

Adapt to delivery approaches?
Previous experience
Due to the scope of the instructional materials, instructors will not be provided with instruction how to download Camtasia Studio 7 on their personal computer.
Because instructional materials for how to download and install Camtasia studio will not be provided, instructors will need to use a computer with the software already installed. Therefore, they will need to come to the Kent main campus to take the instruction in a learning setting that simulates an authentic work setting with the exception of downloading and installing the Camtasia Studio 7 application prior to recording narrated PowerPoint presentations on their personal computers.

Design and Delivery Contraints
Previous experience
Computer in the learning setting will already have the Camtasia Studio 7 application installed, so the instructor will not need to perform this step. However, an instructor would need to perform this step in an authentic work setting.
Instructors will need to be informed that before they can create narrated PowerPoint presentations using Camtasia Studio 7 in an authentic work setting they will first need to download and install the application. Should a job aid on how to download and install the Camtasia Studio 7 PowerPoint Add-in materials not currently exist, it may need to be developed separately at a later date.
